Gucci has dug themselves another hole that may be harder to get out of. Just a few months after the Italian luxury fashion house was selling a Blackface sweater, that sparked a global boycott of the brand – with some even burning their Gucci wear – the company has now offended another marginalized group.
Gucci is selling an “Indy” turban that was for sale for $790 on Nordstrom, that is now supposedly sold out. Of course, the turban is culture appropriation, leaving lots of people unhappy. “The turban is not just a fashion accessory to monetize, but a religious article of faith that millions of Sikhs around the world view as sacred,” The Sikh Coalition tweeted at both companies.
Another user added: “Dear @gucci, the Sikh Turban is not a hot new accessory for white models but an article of faith for practising Sikhs. Your models have used Turbans as ‘hats’ whereas practising Sikhs tie them neatly fold-by-fold. Using fake Sikhs/Turbans is worse than selling fake Gucci products.”
The backlash Gucci faced previously for its “Balaclava” sweater, that resembled blackface, was not an easy controversy to avert.
